Montefalco Sagrantino, Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, this fine red wine is offered by Azienda Antonelli San Marco. The Sagrantino vine, cultivated for centuries exclusively in Montefalco, seems to have been brought there from Asia Minor by the followers of St. Francis. In this case, the vineyards are located in the hills between 300 and 400 metres above sea level, with south and south-west exposure, trained by spurred cordon and Guyot. The plants here have an average age of 15 years. Harvesting generally takes place in the second week of October, with the grapes picked by hand. The bunches delivered to the cellar are sent to vinification, with the tanks being filled by gravity. This is followed by fermentation in contact with the skins for 25-40 days at a controlled temperature. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, mostly large, for at least 18 months and rests in cement vats before bottling. Intense ruby red colour. The nose is rich and powerful, ethereal and complex. Typically characterised by notes of fruit and herbs, where citrus, cherry, berries, mint and oregano stand out. In the mouth it reveals itself to be a very structured wine, with firm and persistent tannins. A wine that expresses itself best with long bottle ageing. Montefalco Sagrantino generally reaches full maturity 10-15 years after the harvest and is able to age in the bottle for more than 30 years. On the table it accompanies grilled and roast meats, braised or stewed red meats, game and mature hard cheeses.

Compared to Sagrantino Montefalco DOCG, this Montefalco Rosso DOC does not come from a pure processing of Sagrantino grapes but from a particularly successful blend of grapes typical of central Italy. In this version proposed by Perticaia, for example, the basic blend includes a large portion of Sangiovese, to which Sagrantino and Colorino are added in equal parts. Harvested by hand, the different varieties have different ripening times. For this reason, Sangiovese is harvested in mid-September while Sagrantino must wait until at least the beginning of October. In the cellar, cold maceration and partial fermentation of the masses, on yeasts naturally present on the skins, and contact for 18 days to extract all the colour and aromas. After blending, the wine goes into steel vats where it matures for about a year. This is followed by bottling and a further six months of ageing in the cellar before final release. Ruby red, in the glass, this thoroughbred Umbrian is characterised by a beautiful, vivid colour. The nose reveals a classic Montefalco wine that opens on pleasant notes of red fruit and a light spiciness. In the mouth, it reveals good structure, evident but well-smoothed tannins and a great final freshness that gives the wine a very pleasant drinkability. A fine wine for ageing, it does not fear the passage of months in the bottle. If stored well, it can continue to give great satisfaction for 5 years or more. A wine for the whole meal, it goes well with hors d'oeuvres of cured meats and first courses of Umbrian cuisine.

This operation has been perfectly accomplished by the skilled technicians of the La Veneranda winery, who demonstrate with this Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG that they have interpreted the vine and its bizarre nature to the best of their ability. Vinification is traditional, in steel, and involves an initial phase of contact with the skins that lasts for about two or three weeks. In the meantime, the wine is kept at a controlled temperature and undergoes frequent daily pumping over. The result is a beautiful red wine characterised by an intense ruby colour, with nuances that turn towards garnet. The nose opens with the characteristic scents of the vine, such as wild strawberries and raspberries, strawberries and morello cherries. All this is well accompanied by a delicately spicy finish reminiscent of vanilla, sweet pipe tobacco leaf and even coffee. In the mouth it is dry, with a nice tannicity, typical for Sagrantino, in this case well mediated by the freshness and good alcohol content. A wine with a good structure, it demands a classic pairing with red meat dishes.

It's a red wine that should undoubtedly be paired with very structured dishes, including game, or very mature cheeses and spicy flavour.
