Sometimes the word is enough: Ben Ryé. Anyone who pays the slightest attention to Italian wine knows that this is the name of the sweet Sicilian wine that is among the most appreciated in the world. It is a very elegant Passito di Pantelleria DOC, proposed by the Donnafugata winery. It comes from a careful processing of Zibibbo grapes dried under the island sun, and then fermented in steel at controlled temperature. To the fermenting must, produced from fresh grapes, are added, on several occasions, hand-picked and selected sultanas. During maceration, the sultanas release their extraordinary heritage of sweetness, freshness and very personal aromaticity. This is followed by a phase of refinement in tanks for about 8 months and at least another 12 months in the bottle, before being marketed. Ben Ryé is golden in colour, with luminous amber highlights. The bouquet is very intense, with notes of sultanas, apricots and candied orange peel. It is easy to distinguish, then, the delicate hints of Mediterranean scrub. In the mouth it reveals a proverbial and extraordinary freshness that perfectly balances the remarkable sweetness. Here, too, we find the same pleasant sensations of dried Zibibbo grapes, fruity sensations, aromatic herbs and honey. It is excellent when paired with spicy and sweet dishes, and goes well with caramelised duck, blue cheeses and foie gras. But it was born to exalt good Sicilian desserts or to accompany the more reflective in long and pleasant evenings of meditation.

Only a few years ago, if you asked an expert what he thought of the quality of Sicilian sparkling wines, you would probably have obtained a reaction of simple incredulity. Sicily, it was thought, was not a land suitable for the production of bubbles. Much less of the classic method. And yet, thanks to the efforts of far-sighted companies such as Donnafugata, today even the region of Sicily boasts a first-rate production of sparkling wines. In this case we are dealing with a classic method produced from the historic Contessa Entellina vineyards. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, harvested by hand and carefully selected first on the vine and then in the cellar, on a vibrating table, before soft pressing. Simple vinification of the base wines, after bottling Donnafugata's classic method rests on the lees for no less than 36 months, before disgorging and subsequent dosage. Brilliant straw yellow in colour, this bubbly presents a fine and persistent perlage. The 2017 vintage, in particular, offers an intense bouquet, with aromas of sweet citrus fruits such as citron, green tea and bread crust. On the palate, however, it is fresh and vibrant, demonstrating both good structure and complexity. It is a harmonious and savoury Brut with a strong personality.

The year was 1995. In Italy, the government had been led by the Honourable Silvio Berlusconi for a few months and Juventus, after 9 years, won the Scudetto. A different era. That year, in Sicily, the first vintage of the mythical Mille e una Notte was born. It was born from the dream of Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo, founders of Donnafugata, to honour their land with a great red wine, the result of collaboration with the great Giacomo Tachis. Success was immediate and within a few years the wine became part of the Olympus of cult labels. Those that must be tasted at least once in a lifetime. It is made from a blend of Nero d'Avola, Petit Verdot, Syrah and other typical local grapes. Harvesting is by hand in boxes, with careful selection of the grapes in the vineyard and further selection of the bunches in the cellar on the vibrating table. Vinification in stainless steel, with maceration on the skins for 14 days at a controlled temperature. After processing, the wine is aged for about a year in new French oak barriques, and at least another 24 months in the bottle. Intense ruby red in colour, it presents a complex bouquet characterised by notes of red and black berry fruit, with fresh balsamic hints, spicy hints of black pepper and delicate nuances of sweet roasting reminiscent of vanilla. In the mouth it is soft and enveloping, with great structure and ripe and refined tannins. It closes with a remarkable persistence of taste. A wine destined for very long ageing, experts are ready to swear that it can easily evolve even for 20 years, if it is well preserved. On the table it requires a decisive pairing, such as a succulent rack of lamb or pappardelle with meat sauce.
