Mosconi is a MGA that is often picked late and so could possibly have benefitted from the warm and dry 20017 vintage. This example from Pio Cesare is focused on elegance with lifted, concentrated aromas and flavours of orange peel, strawberry jam, rose and a touch of smoke, which all become intoxicating on the palate. This great intensity and concentration are supported by firm, muscular tannins and an assertive finish, combined with crisp acidity. The Pio Cesare 2017 Barbaresco is subtle and fine in personality, yet there is plenty of Nebbiolo elegance and complexity. Past vintages of this wine have shown enormous consistency when it come to their inner finesse, and this hot, more challenging vintage is no different. That's quite an accomplishment on its own. Tart cherry and cassis segue to spice, campfire ash, tobacco and dried lavender flower. Perhaps the tannic power of the wine is more robust but not by too much. (Monica Larner)

For about 21 days, small pieces of bark from China Calissaia and China Succirubra are left to macerate in an infusion of alcohol and a very small amount of our "classic" Barolo. A profound expression of the territory. After all, we are talking about a label from the historic Pio Cesare company. Barbera d'Alba DOC, this red wine of the territory originates from family-owned vineyards in various vocated areas, such as Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, Treiso, Sinio and Diano d'Alba. A pure Barbera, its typicality and vibrant character can be found in this label. The grapes are vinified in steel with maceration on the skins lasting around 20-25 days, allowing the aromas and flavours to be fully extracted. After fermentation, the wine rests in French oak barrels for 12 months, with a small portion maturing in barriques, adding complexity and structure. In the glass, the wine is a beautiful intense colour and offers an aromatic bouquet dominated by ripe fruits and spices. In the mouth it is full, soft and persistent. Ideal with grilled and braised red meats, mature cheeses and mushroom dishes. It also goes well with savoury first courses.

It is called L'Altro and is a Langhe DOC proposed here by Pio Cesare. A fresh and lively alternative to the classic Piedmontese Chardonnay. In fact, this wine is the result of the meeting of two grapes, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which blend harmoniously to give life to a label with a decisive character and contemporary taste. The grapes of the blend come from vineyards owned by the Pio Cesare family, located in particularly suitable areas within the Langhe. The Chardonnay gives structure and elegance to the wine. The Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, adds freshness and aromatic notes, completing the picture with a touch of liveliness. The grapes are vinified separately in steel at a controlled temperature. The Sauvignon Blanc retains its aromatic freshness, while the Chardonnay matures for a short time in barriques, where it acquires a slight complexity. A wine that, while retaining the structure and elegance of the original variety, is distinguished by its fragrance, making it ideal even for those approaching this great red wine for the first time. The grapes, in this case, come from the family's own vineyards, located in particularly vocated areas within the Langhe, where the soils are of limestone-clay origin and the temperate microclimate lends personality to the fruit. A small percentage of Pinot Noir is added to the Nebbiolo, giving the wine softness and fruity notes, as well as a touch of freshness. After manual harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed. This is followed by a short maceration on the skins and fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. Ageing takes place entirely in steel. The wine, in fact, does not 'touch' wood, to preserve freshness and immediacy. In the glass, Il Nebbio has an intense ruby red colour with garnet reflections. The nose opens with a fresh and fruity bouquet, with hints of currants, cherries, wild blackberries and violet flowers. In the mouth, however, it is soft and enveloping, with velvety tannins and a lingering finish. Perfect with white meat dishes, cured meats, pasta dishes with meat sauce and mushroom risottos. Try it, however, also as an aperitif or with medium-aged cheeses. A curiosity to conclude. Nebbio Langhe DOC started out as an 'entry level' wine in the Pio Cesare range, but quickly established itself as a label with great personality.
