The Château Rayas features among the very greatest of French wines. Many connoisseurs consider it to be the best AOC wine. This estate was founded relatively recently by Louis Reynaud (the vines were planted in the early 1920s), who set himself apart from traditional customs practiced in Châteauneuf du Pape. In a region traditionally blessed with the balmy rays of the sun in the summer, he positioned most of his vineyard to the north, and mainly focused on a single grape variety (Grenache) in a appellation where thirteen are permitted. His son Jacques is portrayed as an unusual character - eccentric, even. He took up the relay, carrying the wines to dizzying new heights and levels of quality while employing traditional techniques. Today, the estate is run by his nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud.One peculiarity of this Châteauneuf du Pape is that a staggering proportion is comprised of Grenache: 98% of the blend, approximately. The wine-maker prioritises low yields (no more than 18 hectolitres per hectare) in order to allow the exceptional land to express itself: the sandy soil here is not home to the characteristic bed of pebbles that the area is known for, because Louis Reynaud removed them by hand! Fermentation is carried out in concrete vats and the wine is aged for an average of 20 months in old oak barrels. In good years, Château Rayas reaches incredible levels of voluptuous smoothness. This wine is characterised by extraordinary aromas of cherry and raspberry, resulting in a finesse and power that has no equivalent in the appellation. A second wine, Château Pignan is also made here, and is of flawless quality.

Vinification involves alcoholic fermentation in steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation, 80% of which takes place in barriques. Lodovico presents itself in the glass with an intense colour and a complex aroma of ripe black fruit, spices, coffee and cocoa that blend harmoniously in an intense and deep bouquet. In the mouth, the texture is dense and the tannins are ripe and smooth, offering a long, persistent and pleasant finish. A powerful and elegant wine, it requires time to fully express its great potential. A small investment that can easily be 'forgotten' in the cellar, improving for years while waiting to be served with main courses of meat and medium-long aged cheeses.

A mild winter and a rainy spring created the ideal conditions for the grapes to grow. The warm and sunny summer favoured the complete and uniform ripening of the fruit, giving wines of great structure and complexity. In this case, the grapes come from the wonderful 'garden' vineyards of Tenuta San Guido, in Bolgheri. A terroir characterised by calcareous and sandy soils, rich in skeleton, and a temperate Mediterranean climate with sea breezes that mitigate temperatures. An ideal microclimate for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes. The former, Sassicaia's main varietal, gives the wine structure and complexity, while the Cabernet Franc adds elegance and spicy notes. Harvested by hand at the optimal time of ripening, vinification takes place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. Alcoholic fermentation lasts about 9-12 days, with frequent pumping over and 'délestage'. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and refinement for 20-25 months in French oak barriques. A long and careful process that enhances the wine's characteristics. In the glass, Sassicaia 2013 has an intense and deep purple-red colour. On the nose, one perceives aromas of ripe red fruits, such as blackberry and plum, with spicy, vanilla and underwood notes. A weather waltz, and one with clear, sharp contrasts! The spring was sunny and dry and ended with a heatwave in June; summer was autumnal, cool and rainy; September was hot, sunny and very dry weather we would usually associate with the month of August. The key to the vintage lay in the soils as well as in the work carried out by the winegrowers. The good drainage properties of the chalk on the lower-middle part of the hillside helped us greatly by allowing the excess water from the summer to drain away which limited any excess vigour in the vines. These factors were complemented by our increasingly eco-friendly viticultural practices which allow us to take our quest for grapes of perfect balance and maturity even further.

A charming old rosé color, this fine Champagne has very clear aromas of strawberry, berry and cherry that are complemented by distinct floral hints and a hint of sweet almond. The predominance of red grapes in the blend, makes this Champagne pleasantly structured, with a distinct prevalence of dark berry fruit hints and a touch of pastry. Excellent already, it is a rosé that is not afraid of the passage of time. Well stored, it can be left to mature for another 10 to 15 years if you want to enjoy an even richer and more structured Champagne. Perfect right from the aperitif, this Rosé goes well with white meat dishes, such as veal with truffles, or with classic wild salmon.
